Each examination consists of a standard examination scheme and can be done by any paediatrician but also by most family doctors. This standard examination scheme allows a reliable separation of normal or pathologic findings. The examinations U1 to U6 all take place in the first year of life, meaning that those exams are very close to each other because early diagnosis at this age is considered very effective. Depending on the age the emphasis is put on different subjects; in the first weeks after birth the process of adaptation for the life outside the uterus is the most important, while in infancy and early childhood the look goes to sensorial functions and motor development.
The first examination (U1), immediately after birth concentrates on diseases or defects that require instant treatment. The U2 happens between the third and the tenth day and contains examination of the sensorial organs like eyes and ears, the cardiovascular system and the neurological system that is being checked through reflexes and certain co-ordinated movements. In addition to the physical examination a blood test, the so called new-born screening test searches for certain metabolic diseases that if treated early enough will not interfere with a normal development. In the following examinations the emphasis is in each case on a different subject. In every examination the length, the weight and the circumference of the head are being measured and put into a diagram in the yellow examination protocol; depending on the age the doctor may ask for motor development or for example for speech progress or the playing behaviour. He may also ask whether the child is being up-to-date with its immunisations. The costs are being taken care of by insurance. The preventive medical examinations are very important for your child, be sure to use them. On these occasions your doctor has some time reserved for you, he can get to know you and your child better and can be there for your questions and concerns.
