Vaccinations in childhood

Englisch

Vaccinations are one of today’s most important preventive measures. The aim of a vaccination is the immunisation of the organism which means the body acquires through the vaccination a protection against certain diseases. There are so called passive vaccinations as well as active vaccinations; in a passive vaccination the body receives antibodies against a specific disease. These antibodies origin either from humans or from animals but nowadays they are made more and more often via genetic technology, with the advantage that there is almost no risk of infections through them and that they do not evoke allergic reactions. Antibodies are immunoglobulins, produced by the body itself if there has been a contact with an antigen, meaning with a pathogenic germ like for example a virus or a bacterial toxoid. There is a specific antibody for every germ and after a initial contact the body is capable of producing more and more of these specific antibodies.

In an active vaccination such contact is produced by injecting antigen in form of attenuated or killed germs or just parts of it. This way the body can produce the antibodies actively which gives a specific and long-lasting protection. The new-born baby is protected by the mother: it has received its mothers antibodies through the placenta. Beginning with the age of three months the baby should receive its first vaccinations.

Since October 1995 the „ Permanent Commission For Vaccinations" recommends the following immunizations against diphteria, pertussis, tetanus, haemophilus influenzae, hepatitis B and polio at the age of three months with 2-3 repetitions; at 15 months measles, mumps and rubella with repetitions at the age of 6 years; except for rubella, which should be repeated for girls at the age of eleven. Only in cases of severe depletion of the immune system, after a bone marrow transplantation or following a long therapy with steroids the immunisations are not being recommended. The costs are taken care of by the insurance and every child receives a certificate of vaccination where every shot and every booster is being documented. Because those vaccinations are all called active ones, a reaction in form of local swelling at the site of the shot or in form of mild fever and weakness is possible. Your doctors is going to tell you about possible reactions, if you have any questions do not hesitate to ask him.
