What do backaches actually mean?

Backaches have become a most common illness: 80 % suffer backaches from time to time, one third has constant backaches, some even children. This civilization illness is not only caused by signs of wear on the bones, joints and spine, but much more frequently is due to poor posture, strained or untrained muscles, overweight, incorrect seating, standing and carrying.

The spine is supported by a complex system of ligaments and muscles, including various muscle groups like the abdomen muscles. The 24 vertebrae are elastically connected by discs so that turning, elongation and stretching the spinal column is possible. If posture is poor the discs or the core of the discs press against the nerve roots and thus cause pain or disturbances in feeling, for example in the arms and legs.

In some rare cases backaches can also indicate an organic disease which can only be determined by a physician's diagnosis.

Why are backaches treated ?

A disc disorder or a round back which are due to bad habits of poor posture at work or in everyday life can cause strain and painful blockages of muscle groups which can become chronic and considerably affect daily life. Successful treatment should be given as quickly as possible to prevent further and possibly lifetime pain.

The vicious circle between the pain which was sudden at first and the resulting protective posture which increases strain itself should be interrupted as quickly as possible. However other discomfort aches and pains in the head, neck, shoulder, breast, spine or cramps in the calves may be caused by the spinal column.

If you have acute backaches, be sure to consult a doctor in order to exclude basic diseases of internal organs like for example kidney or spinal cord diseases.

How are backaches treated?

After your doctor has excluded organic diseases as being the cause for your pain, a specific training of certain muscle groups is recommended depending on the pain, whereby relaxing the spine and thus reducing pressure on the discs is of greatest significance during the treatment. Daily stretching and relaxing exercises or back training, for example three times a week, improves posture by carrying out special movements and eliminates painful strain and blockage in the back muscle. Treatment with medication may be helpful.
