(Travel-) Vaccination Requirements for Adults

Englisch

Active immunisations can very effectively protect children and adults alike against many infectious diseases. Many common infectious diseases that occur infrequently in Europe are widespread in foreign environments because of inadequate vaccination coverage, cultural practices or sanitary systems.

Inform yourself before going on a travel about possible and necessary immunisations. Since certain vaccinations require safety intervals, go early enough to your doctor, at least 6 weeks before the travel. Tell your doctor about existing medical problems, past illnesses and current medications and ask about the necessary vaccinations.
For adults the following immunisations are recommended:

Routine vaccinations for adults:
Diphtheria: every 10 years (combined with tetanus)
Poliomyelitis: every 10 years
Tetanus: every 10 years
Influenza: 1-2 years

Vaccinations for adults in special circumstances (professional, special illnesses, travel):
Cholera: oral or 1 injection (6 months)
Tick-borne encephalitis: 3 doses (3 years or longer)
Yellow Fever: 1 dose (10 years)
Hepatitis A: 2 - 3 doses (5 - 10 years or longer)
Hepatitis B: 3 doses (5 - 10 years or longer)
Japanese Encephalitis: 3 doses (2 years)
Meningococcus: 1 dose (3 - 5 years)
Plague: 3 doses (depending on risk)
Pneumococcal infection: 1 dose (more than 5 years)
Typhoid: oral (5 years, interval to oral polio vaccine!) or 2 injections (3 years)
Rabies: 3 - 4 doses (2 - 5 years)

There is no malaria-vaccine available yet. You can protect yourself against the infection with appropriate drug regimen (chemoprophylaxis) and against the mosquito bites using mosquito nets, wearing clothes that cover most of the body or by using insect repellent. Ask your doctor for advice!
