However flu is often used to mean a cold which was caused by various other viruses, but proceeds harmlessly with coughing, stuffed nose, sore throat and general pain and under certain circumstances includes high temperature. The frequency of these infections increases during cold weather, thus receiving its name.

How are colds caused?

In the course of such a virus infection, bacterial infections like bronchitis, pneumonia and diseases of the throat and ears may arise and they can be treated with antibiotics.

How are colds treated?

Most of the colds which may arise several times a year do not require treatment. Household remedies can decrease discomfort like coughing, stuffed nose and head aches. Inhalation with steam, drinking sufficient liquids and increasing humidity of air in closed rooms contribute to a quicker recovery. Medication to lower fever, pain killers, cough drops or throat lozenges may decrease the symptoms of a cold. The actual influenza which is more serious could affect the heart and circulatory system at an early stage and requires corresponding treatment by a doctor.

Antibiotics or other medication is used for illnesses arising as a consequence of such virus diseases.

Since no medication exists for the virus influenza, certain person are advised to receive vaccination: persons with contact to may people, those suffering from preliminary diseases like heart and circulation diseases, chronic bronchitis, diabetes, should have themselves vaccinated. The best time to do so is from August to November.
